50 Years Klop Early Keyboard Instrument (Chamber Organ)

In by Niels Klop / 17 November 2016 /

Organists developed their technical skills on harpsichord, virginals and klavechords at home during the 17th and 18th century. During the 18th century, the so called Cabinet Organ was developed, most of the time for the upper middle class.
The program on this CD, recorded on a Klop Cabinet Organ, covers music that could have sounded in these domestic situations.
Dietrich Buxtehude composed the Toccata in G for harpsichord. It is a piece for manual, that start with free passages of broken common cords, followed by a fuga that start rather violistic, but develops into a Ciacona with a repeating bass theme.
Bachs poetic adaptation of ‘Jesu meine Zuversicht’ has a decorated melody in the soprano.
Johann Pachelbel was a good friend of Dietrich Buxtehude, te Hexachordum Apollinis was dedicated to him! With the aria Sebaldina several sound colours of the Klop organ are being demonstrated.
The Camphuysen manuscript was made around 1670 and is a book with music for domestic purpose. The Psalms in this manuscript give the impression of the slow tempo that usual around that time and demonstrate how melody notes are accommodated with decorations.
The third part of the ‘Clavierübung’ by Bach was published in 1739 and contains several Choral adaptations. Bach also added 4 Duets to this book, which could be played on several keyboard instruments.
To play a triosonate is a challenge for organists, the 3 different voices imitate 3 different instruments, divided over 2 hands and feet, but they have to sound well individual as well as like a trio ensemble. The 6 triosonates by Bach are probably composed as study material for his oldest son Wilhelm Friedemann. He probably played this on a double manual harpsichord with a seperate pedal in his fathers study.
Also the organ sonate by Hugo Distler is meant as domestic music. His inspiration was the Stellwagen organ in the Jacobi Church Lübeck. After accepting the lectureship at the Conservatory of Stuttgart, Distler ordered, to compensate the absence of ‘his’ organ, a house organ by Paul Ott. Especially for this instrument, Distler wrote this sonate in 1939. Distlers musical language is a mix of baroque with nervous, restless motives. As a whole it resembles the joy of playing.
